How to Spot Fake Cards (Because Scammers Exist)

by TheGeekTrainer Admin on Mar 01, 2026
How to Spot Fake Cards (Because Scammers Exist)

If a deal feels too good to be true, congratulations — you’ve just discovered the ancient marketplace tradition known as getting scammed.

Nobody sells a ₹25,000 card for ₹900 out of kindness. They sell it because the card has the structural integrity of a cereal box and the printing quality of a school project done at 2 AM.

Fake cards exist because:

  1. People want rare things

  2. People want them cheap

  3. Other people want money without morals

You can’t fix humanity, but you can stop funding it.

Red Flags — Things That Should Immediately Trigger Trust Issues

1. Wrong Fonts

TCG companies spend millions designing consistent typography.
Bootleg printers spend minutes choosing “closest looking free font.”

If the card name looks slightly off, thicker, thinner, stretched, or like someone typed it in MS Word — it’s fake.

Pro tip: your eyes know before your brain accepts it.

2. No Texture Where There Should Be

Modern cards are textured.
Fake cards are smooth. Suspiciously smooth. Emotionally smooth.

Real cards feel premium.
Fake cards feel like laminated homework.

If your finger glides across a “full art” like it’s an ice rink → counterfeit.

3. Incorrect Holo Patterns

Real holographic patterns are precise and consistent.
Fake holographic patterns look like someone glitter-bombed a printer.

Common fake holo signs:

  • Rainbow blobs instead of defined patterns

  • Static foil shine across the entire card

  • Pattern moving when it shouldn’t

  • Pattern not moving when it should

Basically: if it looks cooler than official releases… it’s probably unofficial forever.

4. Suspicious Seller Behavior

Cards don’t fake themselves — people fake them.

Watch the seller more than the product.

Massive warning signs:

  • “Bro trust me original”

  • Won’t send close-ups

  • Blurry photos from 2007 Nokia camera

  • Avoids back side pictures

  • Only sells “rare cards” but somehow owns zero commons

  • Price dramatically lower than market value

If they pressure you to buy fast → they want you to think slow.

Best Defense — How to Not Become a Regret Story

Buy Sealed

Sealed products are boring.
Sealed products are safe.
Sealed products don’t wake you up at 3 AM questioning your life decisions.

You might pull nothing.
But at least you didn’t pull a counterfeit.

Use Trusted Stores

Reputation > Discount

A reliable store protects:

  • Your wallet

  • Your collection

  • Your sanity

Random marketplace sellers protect only their next scam attempt.

Compare With Verified Images

Before buying:

  1. Open official card images

  2. Zoom in

  3. Compare text, holo, borders, spacing

If anything feels off — it is off.
Collectors develop instincts. Ignore them at your own financial peril.

Final Advice

You don’t actually lose money buying fake cards.

You lose money and dignity explaining to friends why your Charizard has Comic Sans energy.
