Understanding Rarity Symbols in TCG Sets (Decoded)

Understanding Rarity Symbols in TCG Sets (Decoded)

Not all cards are created equal.

Some are commons.
Some are chase cards.
And some exist purely to watch you open 47 packs and still not appear.

If you’ve ever stared at the bottom corner of a card wondering whether you just pulled treasure… or cardboard recycling material — congratulations. You’ve discovered rarity symbols, the tiny hieroglyphics that decide your happiness, your wallet’s stability, and your emotional wellbeing for the next 6–8 business days.

Today we decode them so you can stop texting your friends:
“BRO IS THIS GOOD???”

Common Symbols Explained

Every trading card game uses a rarity hierarchy. Pokémon popularized the symbol system, and many other TCGs borrowed the same psychological warfare.

Here’s the usual lineup:

● Common

The backbone of every collection.
The reason bulk boxes exist.
The card you will own 19 copies of before opening your first decent pull.

You don’t chase commons.
Commons chase you.

◆ Uncommon

Slightly more useful. Slightly less insulting.
Usually playable. Sometimes good.

You still won’t brag about pulling it, but you also won’t sigh audibly.

Progress.

★ Rare

Your first dopamine trigger.

This is where packs finally acknowledge your existence.
You’ll pause. You’ll tilt the card in the light. You’ll consider sleeving it.

Then your friend pulls a Full Art and ruins your evening.

Special Symbols — Ultra / Secret / Alt Art

These vary by set, but generally include:

  • Double stars

  • Gold borders

  • Textured foil

  • Numbers higher than the set count (e.g., 215/198)

  • Artwork so pretty you forget the card is actually terrible in gameplay

These are the cards you bought the pack for.

Also the cards you won’t pull.

Why Rarity Actually Matters

Rarity isn’t just collector bragging rights — it affects three major things:

1. Pull Rates (AKA Probability vs Hope)

Manufacturers design rarity tiers so not everyone pulls the good stuff.

Typical reality:

  • Commons: guaranteed

  • Rares: expected

  • Ultra Rares: occasional

  • Secret Rares: mythical creatures

If everyone pulled the best card, it wouldn’t be the best card — it would be a coaster.

2. Market Value (Your Financial Emotional Damage)

Rarity directly affects secondary market pricing.

Higher rarity = lower supply = higher price
Lower rarity = binder filler = currency for convincing friends to trade

This is why one card costs ₹20 and another costs ₹12,000 despite doing nearly the same thing.

3. Collectibility (The Real Endgame)

Players want playsets.
Collectors want perfection.

A competitive player needs the card.
A collector needs that exact version with that exact texture that shines at a 37° angle under LED light.

Guess which one costs more.

Final Thoughts — Stop Opening Blind

Understanding rarity symbols won’t guarantee good pulls.

But it will help you:

  • know what you pulled

  • avoid overpaying

  • recognize value instantly

  • and emotionally prepare for disappointment faster

And honestly, emotional preparedness is half the hobby.

Hunt Smarter

Don’t leave it to luck. Leave luck for casinos.
